2010 DC-COPS Classic Golf Tournament

Plans are already underway for the 2010 DC-COPS Classic Golf Tournament. As many of you already know, last years golf tournament sold out in record time and there were several golfers who missed their chance to take part in the tournament. The golf tournament committee is proud to announce that this year the 2010 DC-COPS Classic Golf Tournament will be held at the Fairfax National Golf Club located in Centreville, VA. Although Fairfax National Golf Club is a 27 hole course, we anticipate to once again sell out of openings well in advance of the tournament.

This year's tournament is dedicated to the memory of Metropolitan Police Department Officer Oliver W Smith. On February 26, 1997 Officer Smith was shot and killed during a robbery attempt while he was off duty and returning to his apartment in Forestville, Maryland after his shift. Officer Smith was in civilian attire when three suspects approached him as he exited his vehicle outside of his home. During the robbery they made him lie face down. As they searched him they found his duty weapon and badge and then shot him three times in the back of his head as he lay on the ground. The three suspects were arrested and charged with first degree murder. Officer Smith was survived by his wife and five year old son.

Date: Monday, August 16, 2010
Location: Fairfax National Golf Club

Fairfax National Golf Club has 27 holes and will be able to accommodate the DC-COPS Classic Golf Tournament. Our goal now is to get as many people registered as possible.

• You do not need to pay now in order to reserve your spot.
• You can cancel your reservation at any time without any penalties.

Follow the link below to our new and improved website if you would like to register now. You are more than welcome to pay now if you prefer, but if you would rather just reserve your spot in the tournament then all you need to do is select "Invoice Me" when you are asked for your payment method.

It does not matter if you register as a FOURSOME, TWOSOME or INDIVIDUAL golfer, you will be able to select "Invoice Me" when asked for your payment type. We will not start sending out invoices until the end of April and final payments will not need to be made until mid July. This should give all of us enough time to recover from the holidays and set aside a little money to play in a great golf tournament benefiting a wonderful organization in DC-COPS.

Click here to register now: www.copsclassicgolftournament.com

You do not need to pay at the time of registration in order to register for the tournament. We wanted to give the golfers who played in the 2009 tournament a head start in registering as to make sure they had the opportunity to be part of the 2010 DC-COPS Classic Golf Tournament. If you played in a foursome last year and plan on playing again this year then forward this email to your teammates and advise them to have the TEAM NAME or TEAM CAPTAIN'S NAME handy when they register so they will be placed on your team. Feel free to forward this email to anyone who you feel would like to help make the 2010 DC-COPS Classic Golf Tournament another huge success.

Please feel free to contact copsclassic@gmail.com with any questions.

Help C.O.P.S. Implement the "Blue Alert" Nationwide

Based upon the success of the Amber and Silver Alerts and by using the same notification system, Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) is asking law enforcement officers, agencies, and survivors to help put a Blue Alert in effect nationwide. Recently, the Blue Alert was put into effect in Texas, Florida, and Oklahoma. As you may know, the Amber Alert is in effect for missing children and the Silver Alert is for missing senior citizens; and these programs function in many states across the nation. The Blue Alert will provide the means to speed the apprehension of violent criminals who kill or seriously wound local, state, or federal law enforcement officers. To find out how to help, visit the C.O.P.S. website, www.nationalcops.org. C.O.P.S. has initiated a letter-writing campaign to the 47 governors asking for their support. Write your governor today!

C.O.P.S. Changes Mission Statement to Include Co-Workers

Although Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) has always done what it could to reach out to the affected co-workers of fallen law enforcement officers, the mission statement of C.O.P.S. fell short of acknowledging co-workers as a vital part of the membership of C.O.P.S. At the November 2008 Board Meeting, the C.O.P.S. National Board voted unanimously to include the term "affected co-workers" in C.O.P.S.’ Mission Statement. The DC-COPS Mission Statement will also be changed, since we follow the National C.O.P.S. mission.

C.O.P.S. recently made provisions for affected co-workers to become voting members in the 48 local / regional / state C.O.P.S. chapters. C.O.P.S. continues to plan seminar sessions for affected co-workers at the annual May 14 and 16 National Police Survivors’ Conference, and the annual "Traumas of Law Enforcement" trainings make it possible for agencies to learn how to better support not only the surviving families of fallen officers but take care of those co-workers who will forever remember and be affected by the deaths of their partners.

The updated mission statement is as follows:
Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc. provides resources to assist in the rebuilding of the lives of surviving families and affected co-workers of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty as determined by Federal criteria. Furthermore, C.O.P.S. provides training to law enforcement agencies on survivor victimization issues and educates the public of the need to support the law enforcement profession and its survivors.
