Fly the Blue Campaign
blue ribbonConcerns of Police Survivors, Inc. (C.O.P.S.), a national non-profit headquartered in Camdenton, MO, has kicked off its "Fly the Blue" campaign in preparation for National Police Week 2009.

With the signing of Public Law 87-726 in October 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 of each year as Peace Officers' Memorial Day "in honor of the Federal, State, and municipal officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty." The calendar week of May 15 each year during is National Police Week "in recognition of the service given by the men and women who, night and day, stand guard in our communities and the people of the United States to observe such day and week with appropriate ceremonies and activities."

Concerns of Police Survivors, C.O.P.S., encourages all Americans to honor and support law enforcement during National Police Week by joining its "Fly the Blue" campaign. Even though any strip of royal blue ribbon will work, C.O.P.S. is mailing out 1.5 million blue ribbons and asking that they be displayed on automobile antennas during National Police Week. Law enforcement agencies and associations may fax a request for ribbons to 1-573-346-1414 and to be added to the National C.O.P.S. Blue Ribbon mailing list. Include your agency, contact name, mailing address, and quantity of ribbons.

C.O.P.S., organized in 1984, provides healing, love, and life renewed for the surviving families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. C.O.P.S. also promotes officer safety and public awareness of the dangers in the law enforcement profession and the sacrifices made by law enforcement families. C.O.P.S.' membership consists of nearly 15,000 surviving households nationwide.
